Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord : [5] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

The first step to loving God is knowing Him, you can not love whom you have not known.

Hebrews 11:6 KJV

But without faith it is impossible to please him : for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

God first loved you, so loving Him in return is the best you can do to save your soul. This is like a marriage proposal, a normal marriage should involve both parties' love and consent. If the man loves the woman that he gave an engagement ring to her, she might choose either or not to accept the love offering.

John 3:16 KJV

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

If you love God in return you will accept Jesus, His Son, whom He sent. If you accept Jesus you'd love Him if you love Him you'd obey His commandments,  and if you obey His commandments your life is eternally secured in Him.

John 14:15,21 KJV

If ye love me, keep my commandments. [21] He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
