Gen 22 to 24 (Daily bible reading)
Text of focus: Genesis 22:12-13 KJV
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. [13] And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
This text is a vital part of the fulfillment of God's covenant with Abraham. God had told Abraham to sacrifice his only son to him, and Abraham already did it in his heart, but just before he killed his son, God stopped him.
God had told Abraham earlier that in Isaac shall his seed be named (Gen 21:12).
Abraham "against hope believed in hope" Rom 4:18. Abraham's faith was indeed a great one that teaches us to trust God with the whole of our heart.
Why was Abraham willing to sacrifice Isaac?
Abraham trusted every bit of God's word. He knew even if he sacrificed Isaac, God's promise that "in Isaac shall thy seed be called" will surely come to pass, meaning God would raise him back to life.
Hebrews 11:17-19 KJV
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, [18] Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: [19] Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
What great faith.
Despite this confidence in God's ability to raise Isaac back to life, he didn't block his ears from getting the next instruction from God. Abraham would have wasted Isaac's life if he didn't hear God stopping him.
God speaks in part, so we will continue to depend on Him. Don't block your ears and run with the last instruction, listen to God as you move.
Communication with God is progressive, many have ruined things because they never listened to God's next instruction, be wise!
If God had shown you the final destination at times, you'd want to jump at it, avoiding going through the process, but the process always prepares you for the end result
Summary
In the chapters read today (Gen 22 to 24), we learned about the birth of Isaac, the promised child, his offering as a sacrifice, his redemption, his model marriage, and the death and burial of Sarah. Abraham was careful to obey God in everything, he instructed his servant to get a bride for his son from his own house. This is also a reflection of God's program for the church, the bride of Christ. Eleazar represents the Holy Spirit, who has been made a seal until redemption, Isaac represents Christ, Rebecah represents the church, and Abraham represents God the Father.
