Gen 45 to 47 (Daily bible reading)
Text of focus: Genesis 47:19-20 KJV
Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate. [20] And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh's.
Today's text of focus addresses scriptural wisdom for business. Joseph bought the whole of Egypt for Pharaoh.
It's been a thing of concern for many Christians, if they could involve in business and how it should be done if they must do it. It's been difficult to understand, and some Christian totally avoid doing business. Some also get bullied by people who do not want them to make profits by saying, "but you called yourself a Christian." They believe it's a sin to make a profit.
Since Christians do not lie, like others, who would say they are not making any profit from the deal, just to make it sound good to the buyers, it makes them more vulnerable to such bullying.
Is it really a sin to make a profit?
The Lord encourages us to work with our hands, so it is not wrong to make profits.
Do not lie to your clients about how much profit you're making, you're not obliged to tell them your profit! no one will patronize you out of pity, but because your deal is favorable for them.
How much profit can I make from a deal?
The scripture never said how much profit you're to make on a deal, this depends on several factors within the scope of that business. In any case, being reasonable in profit and charges gives you a competitive advantage, you also need to avoid greed.
So don't shake out of your business like a jellyfish, be bold and courageous, it's not a sin to make profits, but it's a sin to lie.
Summary
In the chapters read today (Gen 45 to 47), we learned how Joseph relocated his entire family to Egypt and they were given the land of Goshen. Joseph also bought the entire land of Egypt for Pharaoh, Joseph was indeed a wise man.
